IOMG Technical Standard: Cabling
- All cabling and data outlets shall follow industry best practice and be in accordance with relevant technical and health and safety specifications.
- Cable length matters, avoid excess length and stretching
- Cable management should be used where appropriate
- Avoid routing the cables over equipment and other patch panel ports

Avoid the following actions that can stress the cable:
- Pulling or stretching
- Bending it
- Stapling or applying pressure with the cable ties
- Creating tension in the suspension runs
- Use the Velcro-based ties and avoid using zip ties as they apply pressure on the cables.

For Copper Cables
- Install higher cable categories where appropriate, Cat6 is recommended
- Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSOH) sheathing

Additional requirements for Datacentres
- Install higher cable categories where appropriate
- Cat6 is required for all copper structured cabling.
- Label the cables with their source and destination
- Remove the abandoned cables
- Cable runs must be used for inter-cabinet connections

User data outlet faceplate
- All outlets shall be provided with spring loaded shutters that automatically close when patch leads are removed
- All IDC connector blocks shall be permanently fixed to the faceplate
- All four pairs of each UTP cable shall be terminated onto the rear of the faceplate
- Outlets must be clearly labelled to match the equivalent patch panels in the local wiring cabinets
